The largest city in the region, Manado is a key tourist transit point for visitors. Sam Ratulangi International Airport of Manado is one of the main entry ports of Indonesia. The local language spoken in Manado and the surrounding area is called Manado Malay.
The principal deep-water port of the Northern Sulawesi is at Bitung, about 48km from Manado. This seaport carries trade between one island and the others, as well as with Singapore and the Philippines.
The main industries of the province are copra and cloves. Northern Sulawesi has the larger concentration of coconut trees than anywhere else in Indonesia. Most of the coconut tress are grown by the people of Manado and are organically grown. It is famously known as the Coconut Island Manado.
